Above, “Slime Pipipi,” a baby book designed in collaboration with some kind of infant behavior specialist – basically, meaning it has bright contrasting colors and simple images babies can distinguish. It’s unfortunately about six years too late for my kids, but wow, it’s adorable!
For slightly older kids, Square Enix is also publishing Dragon Quest themed arithmetic and hiragana books.

First, the Nintendo Switch Dragon Quest XI S Loto Edition, for Japan. Okay, the Slime Joy-Cons are great, but I can resist–
oh no, the Dragon Quest Slime Controller for Nintendo Switch. It comes with a treasure chest that works as a Switch stand. And then the Slime sits on top of that when not in use. How can I live without this… (checks listing) one hundred dollar video game accessory? You know, I skipped the PS2 and PS4 controllers. I think I’m due.

I know some are upset that they bought this for PlayStation 4 or PC just a few months ago, and now here comes a “Definitive Edition” with features the other editions likely won’t get. A lot of Switch owners like me, though, have been pretending those releases didn’t exist, and are thrilled that it was worth the wait for a semi-portable Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age.
This Switch version due this fall will have “newly added character-specific stories, the option for increased battle speed, fully orchestrated field and battle music, and the ability to switch between HD and retro-inspired 16-bit visuals.”
Amazon has Dragon Quest XI S available to preorder for now.

Coming next year to PS4 and Switch – the console that is basically both GameCube and GBA. Not that you’ll need some complicated setup to play this with friends. If a map with lines going back and forth is any indication, this’ll be online. That’s where my friends live!

The Switch port of the DS classic has a cool co-op mode!
Players can join rhythmic battles using either Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch touch screen. In two-player co-op mode, players can battle Noise and challenge the Reapers’ Game together.
I don’t know if the frantic multitasking RPG battles are going to be too much for my kids and me, but we’ll find out.
Spotted at San Diego Comic-Con! There’s no info yet, but the posable figure is from Square Enix’s Bring Arts toy line for the upcoming Final Remix release on Switch. Shout-outs to Michael for the tip!
PREORDER The World Ends With You: Final Remix
Releasing with the Switch RPG on July 13, this $99.99 “Wayfarer’s Edition” includes the game, a double-sided cloth world map for Orsterra, a soundtrack CD, a replica of the Leaf Coin in-game currency, and an 8-page pop-up book with item compartments. Preorders for the pack just went up on Amazon.
Square Enix put out a Octopath Traveler trailer yesterday showing off two new playable characters, Tressa the Merchant and Alfyn the Apothecary:
Just think of all the people who will be impressed when they see the spine of this bougie-looking “book” sitting next to all of your Naruto manga on a shelf.
BUY Bravely Second, Octopath Traveler
Arguably, both Scotch whisky and the original Final Fantasy are acquired tastes, so I like this Shinanoya/Square Enix collab, available for preorder January 22 from Shinanoya’s online store – in a limited release of 303 bottles. If you’ve ever wanted pay over $300 for a bottle of booze with Yoshitaka Amano art on it, this is your chance.

The January 11 Nintendo Direct wasn’t just a meme! Nintendo dropped an ND Mini this morning (embedded below), opening it with news that Square Enix’s cult DS game The World Ends With You will release to Switch this year.
This 2008 Nintendo DS game has been updated for Nintendo Switch with HD visuals and a new epilogue that sheds new light on the game’s story. Players can join rhythmic battles using either Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch touch screen.
And here’s the Nintendo Direct Mini:
No more remixes after this!

The latest version of Tozai’s rebooted, painfully difficult, great Spelunker series will be released on Switch (and PC) October 19. Spelunker Party offers multiplayer for up to four very, very patient, fragile adventurers, online and offline!
I’m totally looking forward to this! I got extremely into Spelunker HD on PS3, and I think the Switch form factor is going to get me back in.

You don’t need me to tell you that this Switch JRPG from the Bravely Default devs is lit – you saw the awesome aesthetic and concept yourself in the Nintendo Direct last night. Weird (but accurate) name notwithstanding, Octopath Traveler is looking like a must-buy when it releases next year.
You can try it out right now with the free demo on the eShop! I’m gonna try and stream it in 15 minutes around 4:45PM ET on Twitch, so you can watch me bumble through that if you’d like to check it out that way instead.
[Update: That was fun! You can watch the stream archive here – it starts a couple minutes in. I’ll try and stream the Primrose path tomorrow!]
BUY Bravely Second
It’s releasing worldwide on February 15 for PC and PS4, too, but I really love seeing new PS Vita game announcements (though a Switch version would also have been nice). So far, it sounds like this is a digital-only title?
Square Enix is releasing this 3D remake of Secret of Mana with 3D graphics, voiced characters (with various language options, including Japanese audio with English subtitles), a newly arranged soundtrack, and more. If you preorder the game on PSN, you’ll receive PSN avatars of the RPG’s characters instantly, as well as DLC costumes when the remake releases.
One nice thing about this is that it’s a way to play Mana without trying to buy a SNES Classic. [Thanks, Tony!]
