Well, this is a tough spot. I’m trying to reduce my use of paper towels, napkins, and plastic, and now I’ve just seen this 3D printed plastic paper towel and napkin holder, and I love it. Can burgeoning environmental concerns stand up to a novelty Mario thing? I don’t know!?
If you have access to a 3D printer and a need to display these particular household items, you can check out the design here.

The Switch Arcade Archives release of VS. Super Mario Bros. will be out in Japan December 22. This remixed, kind of weird version of Super Mario Bros. has never been available outside of the arcade format, and I’m pretty excited to see it happen. Publisher Hamster hasn’t announced dates for the West yet, but Mario Bros. was a simultaneous worldwide deal, so…
Also, this is the first time since that weird Hudson Super Mario Bros. Special that someone other than Nintendo has published Super Mario Bros. Probably!

Maybe! Maybe it’s already sold out, I don’t know! $99 on Amazon.
[Update: It’s already out of stock. Guess you have to buy that $5 Waluigi amiibo instead now. One million unsmiley faces.]

Mario debuts on the iPhone and iPad on December 15, releasing as a free download but with a $9.99 one-time fee for unlimited access to all of its three modes (World Tour, Toad Rally, and Kingdom Builder). Super Mario Run features six worlds (1-1 to 6-4), a portion of which are playable in the free version.

“Super Mario Run is the first Super Mario Bros. game developed specifically for mobile devices. In the game, Mario runs forward on his own, but relies on the tap of a single finger to jump over obstacles, avoid enemies, pull off stylish moves, collect coins and reach the flagpole to complete courses.”
The game will launch in 151 countries and regions, supporting English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and traditional Chinese language options.

Well I’m going to read that for sure. The amazingly detail-rich Legends of Localization series features Zelda and (soon to be released) Earthbound volumes, and now author and professional translator Clyde Mandelin is working on a book about the localization of Super Mario Bros.
Because the Japanese version of the game features English text, we’re expanding our scope and researching Super Mario Bros. from as many countries in the world as possible. We’ll look at its release and how it differed in each country, the different character names and terms used in each country, and even examine the bootleg Super Mario Bros. cartridges (and their bootleg consoles) in countries that never got an official release.

We got an 8-bit Wii Fit Trainer sliding down a flagpole sideways, jumping on Goombas, and swimming past Wigglers in Super Mario Bros. scenes. What.
You’ll be able to unlock Wii Fit Trainer and other costumes for Super Mario Maker with the characters’ corresponding amiibo.

Nintendo released an odd eShop app in Japan last night called Collectible Badge Center. From what I can gather, it features a crane game that allows you to win badges and pins, which you can then use as icons or decorations for your 3DS home menu. You can see it in action here.
While the app and the first five plays are free, you will need to pay ¥90 (around $0.75) for five more additional plays. You can also win a free play each day through a practice mode. So far the badges/pins include images from Super Mario Bros., the Mario 3D games, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and the Famicom, but it sounds like the app will introduce new images regularly.
I love that there’s more 3DS home menu customization! I love that Nintendo found a way to give this to us in a creative way, even if it’s at the cost of more free-to-play elements seeping onto the system! And I love that the company continues to employ rabbits to sell us digital items on the handheld. Images via DarkWish, Robin64, Brian, Kouriozan, Japanese 3DS, and miki800.

Along with offering remixes/minigames/mash-ups for classic 8-bit titles and online leaderboards, Ultimate NES Remix will offer a full version of Speed Mario Bros., a very fast version of the original Super Mario Bros.
The mode is available right from the main menu. Mario is fast! The music is fast! It’s speed-running through the game literally huhuhuhu.

Hobonichi, the Japanese company headed by Mother/Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi and the maker of fine daily planners, has teamed up with Nintendo for a cute, unexpected product: Super Mario Bros. and Mr. Saturn haramaki belly warmers.
They’re part of Hobonichi’s 2014 Summer Collection, available on the company’s online store now. Pingmag and the Hobonichi Love blog explain the accessory’s appeal:
“The haramaki was once strictly functional underwear that had a grandpa-image similar to yellowing long johns. In 2001, Hobonichi reinvented them as fashion items to layer with your clothes.
You know those everyday momentary chills you get when you bend over and your shirt rides up a little? Gone. I see London, I see France, I see someone’s wearing a super handsome belly warmer over their pants. Studies have proven that wearing this thick, extra layer around your stomach keeps the rest of your body warm in the winter. It’s also great in the summer when trapped inside all day under a blasting air conditioner.”
You can find instructions on how to purchase a haramaki from Hobonichi’s Japanese site here. More photos after the break!
It’s E3 week, so expect lots of news from the bleeding edge of video game technology, like this amazing 1-up trick in Super Mario Bros., by S Haya (via Famicom no Neta). I can’t imagine the combination of virtuoso-level playing, tool-assisted replaying, and ingenuity that led someone to finally hit upon this method. Skip to 2:40 to see it in action!
Here’s how it works: start a two-player game in “hard mode,” die as Mario in 1-2, get to 5-2 as Luigi, die to a Hammer Bro while climbing a hidden vine, drop back into 1-2 as Mario, climb the bugged vine, and smack Buzzy Beetles a million times for easy 1-ups. Famicom no Neta’s Google-translated post calls this technique “violent buttocks.”
The best part is that if you have the skill to pull this thing off, you definitely don’t need any extra lives.

It’s pretty great to see more games paying tribute to the Year of Luigi. Speaking of Scribblenauts Unmasked, I reviewed the Wii U version of the game at Joystiq!

How does Exploding Rabbit/Jay Pavlina do it? How does he top himself with every Super Mario Crossover release and put out something completely unexpected but so fun (from what I can tell in this trailer, at least)? You’ll get to play this around May/June 2013 when it releases for PC.
It’s a travesty Nintendo will likely never make anything like this, or allow someone to put out this remix on its consoles. The fact that this is of questionable legality means our legal system is worthless. This should be not only legal, but mandatory.
